First thing to do is have an idea of what you want your pergola to look like and where you want it. Online is a good place to start. There are many designs available online to choose from. There are many different materials available to build a pergola. Stone face pillars and concrete and wood to name a few. Wood being the sole material for the one we are discussing here. Once you have a plan together on what it is you want it is important that you check with you cities local zoning department and building department to get proper permits and code requirements. Most cities have these building and zoning departments. If your city does not have one, then you would contact the county building department for your permits and approvals.

This is the first project I am going to talk about on here. Step by Step on building a pergola for your back yard. Pergolas are a great place to gather on a hot summer day to get a little shade from the sun.

They add a lot of character to a landscape and a beautiful focal point if designed correctly.
